Photograph it before you move anything — that is the part people get wrong and cannot undo. Then make the yard safe and call us. We secure downed runs quickly and supply the written documentation your insurer will ask for.

Move it clear, but keep it on the property until the claim is logged. An adjuster may want to see it.

Will insurance pay for it?
Usually, yes. Fences generally fall under the "other structures" part of a standard homeowners policy, subject to your deductible and to what actually caused the loss. What a carrier will push back on is damage that a storm finished rather than caused — posts already rotted through at the ground line, a run that had been leaning for two seasons.
That distinction is the reason step one above matters so much. Photographs taken before anything is cleared, including the base of the posts, are what separate "the wind took it" from "it was going anyway". We supply a written itemised estimate and our own damage photographs as part of the job.
To be clear about what we are not: we are not adjusters and we do not file claims. The claim stays yours. We give you the documentation a claim needs and we will talk to your adjuster about the scope of work if that helps.
An honest word about timelines
After a widespread event, every fence contractor on this coast is looking at the same shortage at the same time — material, crews and daylight. Temporary securing is usually same or next day. A full rebuild in that first week depends on how many properties are affected, and anyone giving you a firm date before that is clear is guessing.
We would rather tell you "we can secure it tomorrow and rebuild in two weeks" and be right than promise Thursday and not turn up. That is the same reason our reviews keep mentioning schedules.
Rebuild it so it holds next time
Storms are a sorting mechanism. What fails is almost never the pickets — it is the posts and what is under them:
Wood posts rot at the ground line, where they stay wet, and wind finds them. Galvanised steel posts do not, and on this coast that is the single upgrade worth paying for.
Footings sized for the soil and the exposure, with a concrete bell or over-pour where the site needs it. Gumbo clay moves and a standard hole does not account for it.
A solid privacy fence catches wind like a sail. On an exposed lot, a shadowbox that lets air through is often the more survivable build and looks finished from both sides into the bargain.
Gate hardware sized for weight and gust load, not for looks. Gates are usually the first thing to go.

Does homeowners insurance cover a fence blown down by a storm?
Usually yes — fences are typically covered under "other structures" on a standard policy, subject to your deductible and to the cause of loss. What it will not cover is damage from long-term rot or neglect that a storm merely finished off, which is exactly why photographing the damage before anything is moved matters.
What should I do first after a storm takes my fence down?

Repair the damaged section or replace the whole fence?
If one run went down and the rest is sound, repair it. If the storm found weakness that was already there — wood posts rotted at the ground line, several leaning before the wind — a replacement usually costs less over five years than two rounds of repair.
